Eyes and looks

It is rather difficult for me to appreciate my physical appearance. I consider myself less than average. Other people though are quick to say that I underestimate my looks. I do admit that my eyes are my best feature. The color is a mixture of green and hazel, depending on the light. Apart from the color though, my eyes show exactly what I am feeling towards other people, be it love or even hatred (if I choose to show it). My best characteristics are my sensitivity towards others feeling, even before they mention it. I think this a type of empathy. I can usually feel the vibes when I walk into a room, so  I am almost always warned and prepared for whatever mood other people are in. My ability to listen to others problems and help them through difficult situations is probably what makes others like me.

Friday evening movie night

Friday evening with a bowl of fresh popcorn, a movie in the DVD player and my children on either side of me huddled under a warm blanket. It is one of the most cherished moments of the week.  This is a time of total peace. You may watch the movie or not, but there is no fighting or nagging or homework or housework. More often than not, the movie is something we all want to watch, so there is common laughter or sharing of tissues.  At one time a power cut altered our plans and changed our quality time together into a totally different experience. We sat in the light of a small candle and played games, told scary stories and just acted like we never ever had electricity in the first place. The years fly by quickly, and my children will no longer live with me, so this time of togetherness, either talking or watching a movie are little memories I will treasure.

Exam Week

December is a very frantic time of the year. Most students are becoming tired of school and homework in anticipation of  the Christmas holidays. However, this time of year is the time of foreign language examinations. This for me is also a stressing time as the examination date is drawing near. For the past week, I have been having more lessons with my English students trying to cramp in more grammar and vocabulary than they have learnt in years and at the same time trying to keep their spirits high. I have had to prepare extra exams, and speaking guidelines, correct argumentative essays, letters of complaint and survey reports, and motivate tired unimaginative teenagers  by playing flashcard games and hangman word puzzles. It was this previous week and maybe one more week to go.

Globalization is out

Turn back time when people were people, countries were countries and life was life. What was different then? It was the fact that globalization was only a word and not a fact of life.  Although I was raised in a different country to the one I am currently residing in, and despite the fact that for me the internet has made the world a small place, I would like to see people speaking their own languages and cultivating their customs and beliefs.  I would like to see people having a sense of belonging once again, especially in their own country. I would love to walk down the street and not listen to people talking in different tongues unless they are tourists. My belief has nothing to do with racism but in small European countries, the mass invasion of immigrants has altered the color and essence of the native people and the culture.

Rock music in the car

Living in a small city, it is not often when I can get in the car and listen to my favorite CD. So, one of my favorite times of the week is when I need to travel for more than 20 minutes in the car and pop in a cd with a variety of rock songs from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.  Music from Bon Jovi, Smokey, Elvis and even Evanescence help me get rid of the day’s stress and relax. On the other hand, it is very frustrating for me to listen to music that is thought of as cultural music or art music or independent as it may be called. It is music with a slow rhythm and lyrics from poems.  Out of respect to others and mostly to my co-workers, I do not explicitly  say that I do not like what they adore listening to , but after a while I become uncomfortable and just ask them to turn the music off because I need to concentrate. I believe that the main reason I dislike this type of music is because it is thought that people with high intelligence and culture should listen to it.

Sikinos Island, Greece

The farthest place from home was the tiny island of Sikinos in the Aegean sea. It is a small island a few miles from the island of Ios and Santorini. Not much of the cosmopolitan islands that people hear about or travel to, but all the same it has the color and the smell of the Greek islands in a sort of slow, lazy way.  After travelling for hours, I finally arrived at the small port and was immediately taken aback by the picturesque monastery hanging high above on the mountain, and the tavern lights glimmering in the sparkling clean waters. I stayed at a villa owned by some friends, who were fortunate enough to have their own private beach. I did nothing but bask in the sun all day, eat nutritious fish and fresh salads and in the evening listen to the islanders talk about this outlandish place while trying to make out the other islands all around.

Redecorating my habitat

Coffee table with coffee table book

If I had $1000 to spend, my one and only stop would be at an IKEA store. I would spend the whole day wondering around, looking at all the merchandise and products, listing favorites and prices, and planning out how to redecorate my small apartment. Others might choose to spend this amount of money on clothes. That definitely sound like an intriguing   idea, but clothes are clothes. At the end of the day you are in your pajamas again in the  same old room. So, buying a new sofa, a TV table, a coffee table and lots of bookcases, a colorful carpet and matching curtains and throws for the armchair, would change my mood every time I walked into the house. I would have a place for my books and be able to organize my belongings so as to have a clutter free environment to sit back and relax.

Teaching English to children

It seems that I am skilled at many things. From organizing international academic conferences to typing and  translating texts. I was once a shop owner selling and repairing typewriters and photocopiers. On the side I even made rubber stamps and plexiglass signs for lawyers. At the moment I am a computer technician and instructor  at a University and when I am not trying to explain how to copy and paste to highly qualified professors in other fields, I also manage the children’s book section at the campus library. However, being around adults all day makes teaching English as a second language  to children by far the best job I have ever done.  It is then when what you do means something. It is such a beautiful feeling when you can actually see knowledge taking form and shape. The sparkle in a child’s eye when he or she realizes that they can communicate easily in another language makes every minute worthwhile. You leave the lesson feeling content and making plans for the next adventure.
